This car was originally put together at Cobra Automotive in CT some years ago. My friend, the owner, purchased the car at a January Russo Steele auction about 7-8 years ago. Since that time some improvements have been made to the car but it’s only been used occasionally.
The car came with a nicely built 302 solid lifter motor. We estimated the horsepower to be in the low 300 range. Since then a much higher horsepower 347 has been installed…believed to be in the 500hp range. The new motor includes a Dart Iron Eagle block, JE pistons, K-1 4340 forged crank, Eagle connecting rods, AFR #1450 205cc alum heads, ATI dampner, Canton road racing oil pan, Victor Jr alum intake manifold along with a Holley 750 carb. A Mallory distributor along with an MSD 6AL fires the plugs. The headers are believed to be from Hedman. The exhaust is open and very nicely empties on the passenger side before the rear wheel. BY THE WAY THE SOUND IS AMAZING!!! The engine was put together by well-known engine builder Rich Catton at RC Performance in Huntington Beach using all the best parts. The cooling is by an Edelbrock alum water pump and a very nice large Griffin radiator with internal heat exchanger for oil cooling.
The engine is backed up by a Lakewood scatter shield with Centerforce clutch followed by a Ford close ratio toploader with Hurst shifter. The rear end is a Ford 9” posi with what we believe to be 3.70 gearing. A Panhard bar locates the rear end.
The suspension is fairly stock Mercury but with the Cobra Automotive Competition front 12” disk brake kit installed. The rears are a Ford Granada disk brake set up. The rear springs are from Magna as seen in the pic. Front brake cooling ducts are also installed. Koni Shocks are installed all around.
Wheels are American Racing Torq Thrust 15 X 7 all around with Goodyear race tires.
The interior is pure race car with all the gauges needed for track use. A 6 point roll cage is fitted along with a Kirkey racing seat. A Safecraft 10lb Halon fire system is mounted in the rear on the passenger side. A Fuel Safe fuel cell is mounted in the stock trunk location along with a Holley electric fuel pump. The battery is mounted in the trunk on the passenger side. Cool suit plumbed.
